Taylor Barlow
biography
Clarinetist, Bass Clarinetist, and Arts Administrator, Taylor Barlow is Executive Director of the Huntsville Youth Orchestra in Alabama and the Instructor of Clarinet and Music History at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Taylor frequently performs with the Huntsville Symphony and has performed with the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, Western Piedmont Symphony, and Mostly Modern Festival Orchestra and given lecture recitals and performances at Conferences such as the International Clarinet Association’s ClarinetFest, the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, the College Music Society’s Southern Conference, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s Undergraduate Research and Creativity Expo.
As a bass clarinetist, Taylor has received the San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s Sky Hi Award and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s Undergraduate Research and Creativity Award to commission and premiere new works featuring the bass clarinet. In 2020, Taylor was the NC MTNA Young Artist Woodwind Competition winner and was a Semi-Finalist at the UNCSA Woodwind Day Competition in 2019.
An active chamber musician, Taylor is half of the San Francisco-based clarinet duo Deadwood that seeks to explore the expanding possibilities of the clarinet duet repertoire while focusing on the intimacy required of the duo instrumentation giving performances at the Rossmoor Chamber Music Society and across the bay area. Taylor was a member of the former Splinter Tongue Clarinet Quartet based in Greensboro, NC that cultivated a musical library consisting largely of young composers and underrepresented identities in the American classical repertoire such as female, African-American, and LGBTQ+ composers giving performances at the Hi-Lites Festival, ClarinetFest, local schools, and venues around the community targeting a wide variety of audiences.
Taylor holds a Masters of Music in Clarinet Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Bachelor of Music in Clarinet Performance, and Bachelor of Arts in Arts Administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Her primary teachers have included Jeff Anderle, Dr. Andy Hudson, and Dr. Anthony Taylor. Taylor maintains a private clarinet studio in addition to her positions with the Huntsville Youth Orchestra and the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
